when you’re reading the most amazing fic and it has several chapters and it gives all those otp feelings and you start to cry because it’s perfect and then you see the last date it was updated: 05/12/1435
This isn’t to say that I don’t enjoy a good villain, but more often than not, my heart is completely captured by the good guys.
So I am so over people acting as if a character being really ‘good’ automatically makes them boring and less complex than a villainous or gray area character. Any type of character can be well written, and personally I don’t at all think there are more complex bad guys/gray area characters than there are heroes in fiction. I think that people often confuse “their motivations aren’t completely clear because the author hasn’t revealed them” with SO COMPLEX AND ESPECIALLY SO MUCH MORE COMPLEX THAN THOSE DULL HEROES.
tl;dr- Being edgy and dark alone doesn’t automatically make you a deeper and more nuanced character than even the most goodie-two shoes of heroes. It’s all in how they’re written, and I’m over heroes and heroines being considered automatically shallower than their antagonists just because of the role they fill in the story.
